5 Issues That Could Prevent You from Getting Dental Implants

Even if you’re missing just one tooth, it can make everyday tasks like eating frustrating. While there are several options available to replace lost teeth, the most beneficial choice by far is dental implants. Because they fully integrate with the jawbone, they boast a success rate of over 95%, even after 10 or more years. However, this treatment isn’t right for everyone. Here are five problems that might not make you a good candidate for dental implants in Bellingham.

Gum Disease

Healthy gums are vital for dental implant success. Gum disease is a bacterial infection that can damage the gums and bone surrounding your implant, causing it to fail. Any active gum infections should be treated before you get dental implant surgery.

Smoking

Tobacco restricts blood flow to the gums, inhibiting the healing process. Research suggests that smokers can have an implant failure rate of up to 20%. To increase your chance of success, stop smoking at least two weeks prior to your procedure. In fact, you’re better off in the long run if you quit smoking altogether.

Weakened Jawbone

The jawbone typically shrinks after tooth loss, as the tooth roots are no longer there to stimulate it. As a result, the bone isn’t dense enough to support dental implants.

Certain Medical Conditions

Dental implant failure is more likely if you have an autoimmune disease or a health condition that complicates healing, like rheumatoid arthritis or HIV/AIDS. Some medications, such as those designed to treat heartburn or depression, can also contribute to dental implant failure by hindering your body’s ability to heal.

Poor Oral Hygiene

While dental implants have the potential to last for several decades, this only happens if you have decent oral hygiene. Failing to brush or floss daily can cause plaque to build up in your mouth and compromise your implants. You might not be a good implant candidate if you have a limitation that affects your ability to clean your teeth.

Even if you have one or more of the issues listed above, you might still be able to get dental implants. For example, bone grafting could strengthen your jawbone so that it can accommodate as many implants as you need. Don’t be afraid to schedule a consultation with your dentist in Bellingham. It could be the first step to enjoying a full, beautiful smile again!
