Could TMJ Dysfunction be Causing Your Migraines?

If you suffer from frequent migraines and TMJ dysfunction, the idea that these two painful conditions are connected may not just be “all in your head.”  In fact, according to a recent study from Sao Paulo, Brazil, patients who experience chronic migraines (occurring more than 15 days each month) are three times more likely to have severe symptoms of TMJ dysfunction than those who have episodic migraines.

Here’s what causes this connection, and what you can do to treat both migraines and TMJ dysfunction with the help of your dentist.

What is TMJ Dysfunction?

TMJ dysfunction is a condition of the temporomandibular joints. It typically occurs when the joints become strained or damaged, but the causes of this are varied. It can happen following injury, stress, or even genetics. Researchers believe that it can affect migraine and vice versa because the muscles in the head and face are so closely connected.

TMJ dysfunction symptoms include jaw pain, popping and clicking when you open and close your mouth, tinnitus (ringing ears), jaw stiffness / limited range of motion, and head, neck and back pain.

Treating TMJ Dysfunction

While it may seem like there is no end to TMJ pain, there is good news. Many patients have found relief from both TMJ dysfunction symptoms and migraine headaches with the help of an occlusal splint. These devices are custom fit to your mouth by a trained TMJ specialist (your dentist) and are worn while you sleep.

They work by positioning your jaw in its ideal resting place, preventing unnecessary movement. This relieves the strain on your jaw joints and can even prevent further damage. Your dentist may prescribe an occlusal splint on its own, or in conjunction with other forms of TMJ dysfunction therapy, which may include physical therapy, orthodontic treatment, and stretching exercises or massage.

Remember, if you are experiencing chronic migraines in addition to jaw pain, you could be suffering from TMJ dysfunction.  To learn more about TMJ therapy and if an occlusal splint could help you get the relief you deserve, please reach out to your dentist today!
